About Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy uses high energy acoustic waves to generate accelerated tissue repair and growth in the affected area. Guided by a shockwave therapy applicator, these waves can be directed to the injured area to treat chronic conditions or injuries that cause severe pain. It can help issues affecting the bones, tendons, and other soft tissues throughout the body.
Studies show the use of shockwave therapy can help ease trigger points that cause pain, reversing inflammation, and promoting the production of new blood vessels and collagen. In one study, 90% of clients were satisfied with their treatment, and some reported a complete elimination of pain.
The benefits of shockwave therapy include:
- No serious side effects
- Studies have proven its effectiveness
- Less expensive than surgery
- Treats various issues affecting the bones, tendons, and soft tissues
- Immediate pain relief
The Treatment Process
During each treatment, acoustic waves are transmitted through a wand-like device that comes in direct contact with the injured area. First, the injured area is identified, then a gel is applied directly to the skin to help in the transfer of the acoustic waves. The therapist then gently pushes the applicator against the treatment area.
The treatment process for shockwave therapy is simple but can vary in duration depending on your specific condition. Some injuries might see improvement after only a few treatments, while others require weeks or months of periodic shockwave therapy sessions. Most patients require at least 3-5 treatments and each treatment is usually administered between 3-10 days apart. This time frame may vary depending on how the patient’s tissues respond to the shockwave therapy.
Although treatment is not usually painful, some patients report discomfort in the area where pain already exists. The intensity of the shockwaves can be adjusted to allow for a more comfortable experience. After only the first treatment, most patients experience some measure of pain relief.
