What Are Plantar Warts?
When the bare sole of the foot comes into contact with human papillomavirus (HPV), hard growths called plantar warts develop on the bottom of the feet, making it quite uncomfortable to walk, stand, or run. These warts are most common in people with impaired or weakened immune systems, such as children and aging adults.
Plantar warts are a viral infection in the foot, which means they tend to spread and reproduce. As they spread, these warts can take a variety of forms:
- Inward plantar warts: These have a small opening on the surface of the sole of the foot, and the wart grows inward into the foot)
- Lone plantar warts: Your plantar wart may not reproduce, but it could get bigger and bigger and more painful, growing other small warts around it.
- Mosaic plantar warts: This occurs when multiple warts grow together in a concentrated area. Mosaic warts are especially challenging to treat and get rid of.
Treatment for Plantar Warts
Plantar warts are easy to identify and treatment typically does not require invasive treatment. In fact, warts often go away on their own if given time, but they are so uncomfortable that most people want immediate relief. When you come to our podiatry team with plantar warts, our goal is to diagnose them quickly and get rid of them completely.
We will work with you to treat your plantar warts, utilizing the most appropriate of the following non-invasive methods:
- Prescription medication
- Cryotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Laser therapy
If none of the above are effective, your podiatrist may opt to perform minimally invasive surgery to cut the wart out entirely. When you come to Unruh Spine Centers, we will use all the tools and methods at our disposal to resolve the source of your pain and get rid of your warts as soon as possible.
