Most people wouldn’t consider a solution classified as an “irritant” to bring them pain relief, but thanks to prolotherapy, that’s exactly what it does!
Prolotherapy is an injection-based treatment option that helps alleviate pain after an injury. By injecting a solution that’s designed to irritate the joint or muscle it’s being injected into, prolotherapy can stimulate your body’s natural healing process. Over time, your body will begin naturally repairing itself. Once it’s repaired, your pain will likely go away entirely or decrease substantially.
Though prolotherapy is primarily used to alleviate back pain, it can also reduce pain in a person’s:
Unlike many other pain management procedures, there’s very little prep work you’ll need to do before prolotherapy. Typically, the only thing patients need to do is stop taking any anti-inflammatory medication they’re on 2-3 days before the procedure. Your doctor will likely also ask you to eat a protein-rich meal on the day of your procedure.
Just before the procedure begins, your doctor will sterilize and numb the injection site. Once your doctor believes you’re sufficiently numb, he/she will begin injecting the solution using a long needle. Depending on how serious your pain levels are and how extensive your injuries are, you may need several injections. We find that patients rarely experience any pain or serious discomfort during the procedure.
By naturally strengthening your joints, prolotherapy helps to do two main things — heal your initial injury and alleviate much of the pain it caused. Because prolotherapy simply helps your body repair itself, the risk of experiencing negative side effects is substantially lower than many other pain management options.
